History of the medical institution’s activities
In 1913, tuberculosis killed approximately 150,000 people, more than twice the number of cancer fatalities. A group of dedicated volunteers refused to accept the tragedy, forming the Jewish Consumptive Relief Association. It was a free, non-confessional tuberculosis sanatorium. Following many fundraising activities, the Association made a down payment on 10 acres of land in Duarte, California, on which they established the Los Angeles sanitarium a year later. The sanatorium was made up of two cottages.
By the mid-1940s, the discovery and application of antibiotics had reduced the number of tuberculosis cases in the United States. However, there was no time to celebrate. Doctors at City of Hope have concentrated on humanity’s next major medical challenge: the fight against cancer. They also assisted people with diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Over the decades, hospital-based research has made substantial contributions to modern medicine. This includes the development of the first synthetic human insulin, the human growth hormone and the technology used to produce the cancer-fighting medications Herceptin, Rituxan, Erbitux and Avastin. City of Hope, which gained the NCI designation in 1981 and the status of a comprehensive cancer center in 1998, is a center for biomedical research, treatment and education. More than 200 physicians and scientists are working together to create novel disease control measures. They aim to understand the biological principles underlying cancer genesis and progression, create new treatments, test them in clinical trials and provide the best possible patient care. They also support patients and their families. This work contributes to a better knowledge of cancer risk assessment and prevention. Recombinant DNA technology and monoclonal antibodies are two examples of fundamental research results developed at City of Hope, which have since been implemented in therapy.
City of Hope is recognized by the National Cancer Institute as a comprehensive cancer center. This is the highest recognition given by the National Cancer Institute. Researchers from numerous research centers cooperate with City of Hope specialists, which yields positive results.
