The fundamental idea of the author’s works is that if a person bows to the force of circumstances, he loses everything human. The author describes this as “mortification of the soul.” For the American genius, the human soul was the main value, and everything else merely added scenery. Ray was surrounded by a big, friendly family from an early age. This inspired the author to write the novel “Dandelion Wine”. Bradbury has incorporated a lot of his childhood experiences into his works, and many of them are dedicated to family members. His father was a telephone exchange fitter who eventually lost his job. This drove the family to relocate to Los Angeles. It was here that Ray graduated from high school. Although, his family was also unable to cover the cost of his college education. Living on the outskirts of Los Angeles, he worked hard and took his first steps in literature. The young man started writing at the age of 12. His first newspaper publication was the poem “In Memory of Will Rogers” in August 1936, and the poem “Death’s Voice” was published the following year in the 1937 Los Angeles Anthology of Student Verse.

Despite the fact that Ray was unable to continue his studies, he was engaged in self-education. He visited libraries and worked there for a few hours a week. By the age of twenty, he had read all of the popular plays, novels and short stories, as well as had learned about American, French, Italian and English history. By 1943, he became a professional writer, authoring up to 52 short stories every year. The author’s earliest works were published in the collections “Dark Carnival” and “The October Country”.

In 1947, Bradbury married Marguerite Susan McClure. They met at a bookstore in Los Angeles where she worked. Initially, neither the writer nor his wife had huge financial fortunes. They worked to make $250 a month, both spouses earning equal amounts of money. Financial success came to the writer with the growth of his popularity.

Ray Bradbury’s most notable works include the short story collections “Dark Carnival” (1947), “The Martian Chronicles” (1950) and “The October Country” (1955), as well as the novels “Fahrenheit 451” (1953), “Dandelion Wine” (1957), “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (1962) and “Death Is a Lonely Business” (1985).

The writer’s science fiction novels and short stories describe events in the future, which are a fairly obvious analogy for the then-America. The works feature many elements from the lives of American society that lead to the author’s disapproval. According to the author, they are beyond the scope of rationality, hence they are interpreted as a warning. Critics dubbed Ray Bradbury “the Martian from Los Angeles.” How else could you explain that a person living in twentieth-century industrial America never flew an airplane, never owned a car, never got behind the wheel and preferred to ride a bicycle? He never graduated from university, yet he had encyclopedic knowledge.

The author’s works

The writer began his work by copying the styles of other authors. For example, his debut collection, “Dark Carnival,” is similar in style to the stories of Edgar Poe. Later, the writer developed an individual style that reflected his creative maturity and unique worldview.

Ray Bradbury is widely regarded as the “master of science fiction,” one of the best science fiction writers and the originator of numerous traditions of the genre. However, he did not consider himself a science fiction writer and did not confine his work to a specific genre, as only a portion of his works were written in the science fiction style. Ray Bradbury’s fiction is somewhat unusual. The author does not pay attention to scientific and technological advancements in his works. For Ray Bradbury, the moral and psychological effects of scientific and technological advancement are more important than the advancements themselves, even though they are an essential component of his “consumer civilization.” Ray Bradbury’s works are psychological prose with a fantasy element. They are complex, full of deep symbolism and philosophical reflections on the purpose of human existence, their fate and the future of humanity in general. In his works, the author simply uses the science fiction genre to express his own ideas and provide a warning to humanity about the potential implications of its material and spiritual activities. Ray Bradbury’s works are relevant owing to their unique writing style, use of specifics of the science fiction novel genre and deep understanding of humanity’s pressing issues.

Ray Bradbury’s work is a true and remarkable phenomenon in American culture. His science fiction works are built on intriguing plots and a deep meaning. Ray Bradbury was a skilled master of words, a subtle psychologist, an emotional lyricist and a wise storyteller. His worldview blended the perspective of an adult who understands the importance of human words and actions with the admiring look of a child who first beheld the colors of this world. Ray wrote dozens of works that have proved science fiction as a legitimate creative form. For a time, science fiction was regarded as second-class literature, a genre in the art of the written word that does not deserve serious consideration.

Distinctive mood of the works

The writer’s famous works all focus on the triumph of the joy of life. This is evident in Bradbury’s biography as well as the variety of genres and forms of his work. This conclusion can be made by simply looking at the titles of works that reflect children’s impressions or the work of dreamy poets. There is hope for humanity in Ray Bradbury’s writing.

However, there is also a “dark side” to Ray Bradbury’s work, in which the writer “scares” the reader (“The October Country”) or describes the awful events of the future (“Fahrenheit 451”). The novel “Fahrenheit 451” offers a vivid image of a society that is afraid of death, but tries to appear happy on the outside. In the author’s writing, love is inextricably linked with hatred. Love for another person and hatred for everything hostile, the things that prevent a person from being worthy of this high title.

Characters of the books

Ray Bradbury’s books stand out among twentieth-century dystopias for their unique deep pathos. Despite the lack of bloody scenes or brutal murders, the novels include many prophetic events that could become tragic realities. People should be terrified of indifference, permissiveness and absolute dependency. Humanity’s self-destruction stems from a lack of will to live and develop. Each piece of science fiction by the author has its own hero, who lives as a cog in the machine for a while before attempting to forge a new path for themselves after a turning point. The authoritarian style of power stresses illusory choices and hopelessness. Ray Bradbury’s characters do not immediately make their own moral decisions. They are all actively revolting against the world in their own unique ways. The author’s science fiction works have a strong philosophical and humanistic foundation. They make a person question whether they are making the right choices in their life.

This is a twentieth-century American writer whose name is synonymous with one of the most fascinating phenomena in world literature: science fiction.
