Prior to his promotion during the 2014 offseason, McVay spent three seasons as the team’s coach and one as an offensive assistant (2010).

Prior to his time as head coach, McVay worked as an assistant coach for Jon Gruden, Mike Shanahan and Jay Gruden. Four of those years were spent on the coaching staff. During his tenure as head coach, four assistant coaches (Zac Taylor, Matt LaFleur, Kevin O’Connell and Brandon Staley) on his coaching staff were hired as head coaches around the league.

In his first season leading the team, McVay completed one of the greatest offensive turnarounds in NFL history. He helped the LAR go from the 32nd-ranked offense in 2016 to the league’s highest-scoring team in 2017, marking the first time in league history that a team went from last to first in scoring.

The first-year head coach led the LAR to an 11-5 record and their first NFC West title since the 2003 season. After his first season in Los Angeles, McVay was named Coach of the Year by the Associated Press, becoming the youngest head coach to ever win the award.

Teammate Gurley won the Offensive Player of the Year award. Another teammate, Donald, was named Defensive Player of the Year, marking the first time in the 45-year history of the awards that the league’s top three honors were up for grabs. The LAR placed eight players in the 2018 Pro Bowl, the most in a single season for the franchise since the 1999 campaign.

In his first season as head coach, the LAR special teams unit played an important role in the team’s success and was rewarded with a total of four special teams honorees named to the Pro Bowl. The LAR special teams unit ranked in the top 10 in 18 of 22 statistical categories in the 2017 Special Teams Rankings.

The 2018 LAR were built on the successful foundation that McVay and company created in the inaugural 2017 season. Under McVay’s leadership, the LAR’s passing attack finished among the top 10 in passing yards per attempt. Goff set a career-best with 4,688 passing yards, the second-best single-season total in team history. In the running game, the Eagles’ Todd Gurley followed up the season with an equally amazing 2018 campaign in which he led the NFL in touchdowns (21) and points for the second straight year. His 17 rushing touchdowns were career highs and the second most in a single season in team history.

After his second season as NFL head coach, McVay was ranked 17th on Fortune magazine’s list of the world’s 50 best leaders. He was joined on the list by Bill Gates and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.

McVay’s third season as head coach in 2019 was his third consecutive winning season as the team finished with a 9-7 record. Finishing with a winning record in three consecutive seasons has not been achieved by a team since 1999. It was only the third time since 1980 that a team has accomplished this feat.

In addition, McVay became the first head coach since 2016 to have a winning record in each of his first three seasons as head coach. He became the team’s fourth head coach to have a winning record in three consecutive seasons. In his third year working with quarterback Jared Goff, McVay helped him throw for over 4,000 yards for the second straight season, becoming the first quarterback in franchise history to do so. Goff also climbed the LAR’s passing leaderboard and closed the season sixth on the Los Angeles leaderboard.

A record season

In a season that was anything but normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the team’s defense performed incredibly well, earning the league’s No. 1 ranking and dominating three different categories. The team’s defense held opposing offenses to just 16.8 points per game. McVay won his third postseason title in his career. McVay also helped organize an offensive line that lost two starters during the season.

During the 2021 season, McVay produced his fifth consecutive winning season with the LAR. This was the longest consecutive winning season streak since the LAR posted four consecutive winning seasons between 1983 and 1986. The 12-5 record earned the team its fourth postseason appearance and second Super Bowl appearance. McVay became the youngest head coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl at the age of 36.

The LAR offense flourished during the 2021 season. Under McVay’s leadership, the team’s offense ranked in the top 10 in total offense. Stafford threw for nearly 5,000 yards and receiver Cooper Kupp won the triple crown, leading the league in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.

Personal life

After getting a new position, Sean McVay bought a house for $2.71 million. The house is about 4,700 square feet and has an open design. It has 6 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms and a chef’s kitchen that features an 8-foot-long island. The house offers views of the canyon and mountains. The weather was a key factor for him in moving to Los Angeles, as Sean loves the warmth and wants to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Sean McVay is married to Ukrainian Veronika Khomyn. The girl works as a model and realtor. The couple met when Veronika was a college student in Virginia. She immigrated to the United States in 2019. An NFL coach proposed to her back in 2019. But the wedding ceremony took place only in June 2022.
